Introducing Singapore's new local search engine - Rednano.sg

As a joint venture between Singapore Press Holdings Group Ltd and Schibsted ASA, Rednano.sg was launched on the 18th of March. The search engine will be operated by SPH Search, which is the parent company and a subsidiary of SPH Group Ltd.

Some search engine analysts may think that there is really no room for another search engine in the overly crowded  online search industry, whether its a local or global scale. Even normal Singaporeans may ask, "there is already Google.com.sg, who will use rednano.sg?"

While this is seen as a bold move by SPH, we cannot deny the fact that the company is the largest newspaper publisher on the island for years, providing timely information for Singaporeans and readers around the world. At the same time, SPH now operates a large network of high traffic sites which include asiaone.com, businesstimes.com.sg as well as the newly launched ST701.com. SPH may lose out on search technology to the large players like Google but providing Singapore related information is the company's core strength. 

Difference between Rednano.sg and Google.com.sg

At first look, there is no major difference between the 2 search engines. Both consist of search categories like images, news, maps, web. While Google does not operate a directory and gets its listings from Dmoz.org [The Open Directory Project], we can find a directory category in Rednano.sg. Interestingly, there is also option to search for people. We tried searching for our names and there are actually some interesting results from the local university database.. hmm.. This is not something that can be found with Google search. For the directory result, we can also filter the search result by location such as Jurong west, Tampines. Google Singapore definitely doesn't zoom in to such little details.

Can Rednano.sg become a prominent search engine in Singapore?

We strongly believe that Rednano.sg may become a key player in the local search industry. Combined with its network of other digital media sites and offline materials, Rednano.sg is qualified to position itself well by providing timely and accurate content, especially Singapore news. SPH is itself a content provider and this is essentially search engines' core business - providing useful content for its users.

How do we optimize websites for Rednano.sg

Unlike the major search engines whereby we can find plenty of resources on how Google rank websites, there is little or no discussion on Rednano.sg search technology. We only know that it uses a licensed search technology from FAST Search and Transfer ASA and search listings derived from Yahoo! for its global resources.
