What is link building?

Put it simply, link building involves asking a webmaster from another web site to add a link on their site that may bring visitors to your own site. This is probably one of the oldest form of online marketing. But unlike in the past, web sites nowadays are more willing to trade links with SEO as a key factor in mind.

Type of links:

Apart from directory links, there are 3 types of links, illustrated below:

a) One way link - We call it so when site A link to site B, but site B do not provide a link back to site A

b) Reciprocal link - This happens when 2 web sites link to each other

c) Network link - When a network of web sites link to another network of web sites, there are multiple links pointing to one another

Most often, we are very careful with link building because linking to bad neighbourhood may result in a penalty in ranking, according to Google guidelines for webmasters. In fact, we may not use link buidling campaign at all if we are not able to identify worthy link partners. Some spam sites are even booted from Google search database.

Who is linking to you?

There are many tools to help you identify the web sites that are linking to you. But of course its easier to use Google's database to find out which are the inbound links that Google has indexed in their database. In fact, not all inbound links are indexed into Google's database as you may know.

To find out who is linking to you, just type your domain name exactly into Google search box. For example: "abc.com". If there are less than 20 links, you probably have to do something serious about your site.
